The following excerpt is a blog post regarding music educators' views on modern music.
I think this article holds a very interesting and valid point about contemporary music. With all of the music theory classes and classical music us music educators are exposed to and dedicate most of our learning to, it is very easy for us to almost block out other genres of music, like the contemporary style. We are constantly trained in classical repertoire and forget what the common majority of students our age listen to. Contemporary music is what a lot of students hear on the radio, download on their iPods, and await winners of Grammy awards. Students also have access to technology like SoundCloud and GarageBand in which they can create their own musical creations. Music educators need to take into account that this contemporary genre and technology is what most students know as music. I think teachers need to find ways to incorporate this generation's musical interest into their curriculum. Students would be a lot more interested in music classes if the music they like is a part of it. This could not only attract students to want to be a part of the music classroom, but lead them to learn even more about music that they didn't know before. By introducing a music class with the type of music that appeals to this generation of students, teachers can eventually teach about how much more there is to music, and hopefully have the students gain a greater appreciation for other styles and works.
