Student Development and Diversity

The following files show my thoughts about the development and diversity in a music classroom setting and demonstrate the applications I would use to uphold these important learning ideas.  These represent both my knowledge and disposition on the subject.

The following excerpt is a blog post regarding what it means to be a culturally competent teacher.

A culturally competent teacher is one who is able to understand the music of different cultures and societies. He or she upholds a sense of respect for the cultural differences and can apply them to his or her own teaching. This teacher is able to incorporate the vast variety of music into their own comfortable teachings. He or she should be aware of the cultural differences in the music and expose his or her classmates to the uncountable types of music that exist in this world. I personally think it would be awesome to teach multicultural music! Music is so prevalent all over the world, but our society is only familiar with a fraction of the amazing sounds heard elsewhere. When I become a choir teacher, I will be sure to incorporate multicultural songs in the choir's repertoire. When I was in high school, our choir sang more multicultural songs than our standard American tunes. I will be sure to expose my choir to the drastic differences, yet similarities, between the cultures and hope they grow to have the same appreciation for other music as I do. One of my questions is how will I be able to find true multicultural music and be able to allow my students to listen to recordings of it. Also, where can I learn the proper techniques and methods expected to be portrayed in this multicultural music when I am constantly surrounded by standard, American music?

This is a multicultural music project that I created to be implemented in the classroom for the course E231 General Music Methods. This is an example of my knowledge on the subject of multicultural music.
